Conditions for Lyme Regis Sailing Club memebers on Saturday turned more attractive when the breeze, filling in a little later than hoped, settled the extreme changes of wind direction which predominated throughout the first race.
A course for Optimists was run alongside the club race. Race officer Jerry Rook was assisted by youth RS800 helm, Cameron Moss. Consistent performances by Allan & Chrissey Tyler (Fireball) saw them win race one with a five minute margin, but they were narrowly beaten by 11 seconds by Max Smith in race two. Taking part in their Mirror dinghy for the first time were Andy Leslie with his daughter Charlotte who completed both races.
An early northerly fresh breeze on Sunday gave way to a brisk SW before racing started, justifying the delay until lunchtime. Simon was again on duty, this time as race officer, and made the most of the ideal sailing waters by setting two courses suiting different classes. Jerry Rook & Max Smith, won both races to take the Cup, one of the oldest in the club’s trophy collection dating from 1926, closely followed by Neil Moore (Laser) and Andy Robinson (Solo).
The Cruiser ‘Up Anchors’ race involved a Le Mans start from the beach and manoeuvres including a man overboard rescue. Mike Moore & Andrew Willoughby finished 13 seconds ahead of Keith & Kaye Thompson, followed by Rob & Sharyn Walker.
“The later start time took advantage of the sea breezes expected at this time of the year,” said Sailing Secretary Simon Heusen.
The club’s annual Regatta is on August 6th and 7th and is held in Regatta and Carnival week.
